SRT files are simple text files that can be created in any text editor. Alternatively, there are also captioning services available online where you can upload your film to have captioned or translated by a professional.
To properly write your SRT file:
- Open your text editor of choice.
- Type a 1 in the first line to indicate the first caption and press ENTER.
- Enter the times where the caption starts and ends separated by a --> and press ENTER
- Type out the text that you want displayed. You can use the ENTER key to create multiple lines.
- Press ENTER another time to create a line of blank space.
- Repeat starting from step 2, but replace the "1" with the proper sequence number.
Here is the general format:
(insert sequence number)
hour:minute:second,millisecond --> hour:minute:second,millisecond
(insert caption)
Here is an example:
1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:04,000
This is a caption with one line
2
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:11,000
This is a caption that has
two lines instead of one
3
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:20,000
Always remember to include a
blank line between captions
